Letterman Apologizes But Protest is Still On

Letterman Apologizes, Sarah Palin wanted an apology and now's she got it. David Letterman spent several minutes on his show last night discussing the joke and apologizing to the governor and her family.

David reiterated that the admittedly "coarse joke" that has been in the news for the last week was "a bad joke. I told a joke that was beyond flawed, and my intent is completely meaningless compared to the perception. And since it was a joke I told, I feel that I need to do the right thing here and apologize for having told that joke. It’s not your fault that it was misunderstood, it’s my fault. That it was misunderstood.”

He further stated, "So I would like to apologize, especially to the two daughters involved, Bristol and Willow, and also to the Governor and her family and everybody else who was outraged by the joke. I’m sorry about it and I’ll try to do better in the future. Thank you very much.”

According to the reports from New York's Daily News, Anna Barone, an official with FireDavidLetterman.com, says the apology is not enough. "An apology is a first step, but it's not accountablity to me. CBS should at least suspend him for a little while." The group is still planning to protest outside the show this afternoon.

It can be recalled that the joke prompted at least one advertiser to stop advertising on CBS' website, according to TVGuide.com. Embassy Suites, part of the Hilton Hotels Corp., pulled advertising on CBS' site because of complaints, company spokeswoman Kendra Walker told TVGuide.com. The company was not an advertiser on Letterman's show.

Would that apology be accepted by the Palin's?
